🛣️ Mongolia’s Roads: A Journey of Their Own
Getting around Mongolia is part of the adventure!
-
Out of 50,000 km of roads across the country, only about 20% (10,000 km) are paved with tarmac or asphalt.
-
The majority of paved roads connect directly to the capital, Ulaanbaatar.
-
Most other routes? They’re gravel, dirt, or steppe tracks—unmarked but incredibly scenic.
-
In recent years, major efforts have been made to improve infrastructure. For example, by 2017, over 2,000 km of new paved roads were completed to link all provincial centers to Ulaanbaatar.
🚙 Translation? You’ll be off-roading often—so get ready for a bumpy ride through some of the most beautiful, wild terrain on Earth.
🎒 A Packing List Is a Must
Packing smart is essential—especially if it's your first time in Mongolia.
Mongolia’s weather is famously unpredictable. It’s one of the few places where you might experience sunshine in the morning, a rain shower by lunch, snow or hail in the afternoon, and frost by nightfall—all in a single day, especially during spring and autumn.
🌤️ Check the Forecast Daily
Before heading out each day, check the weather. It can shift rapidly, especially in high altitudes or open steppes.
💼 Smart Packing Tips:
-
Pack light, and use a soft duffel bag or backpack instead of hard luggage.
-
Your packing list will vary based on your trip style (fishing, horseback riding, cultural tour) and season.
-
Most essentials can be found in Ulaanbaatar’s travel shops and outdoor markets if you forget anything.
